It’s that end-of-year season when many clients are asking for help in preparing for the most difficult conversation: asking for a raise. Already this month, I’ve had 3 young female clients whose managers (both male and female) tried to suggest that their age (and sex?) was a factor in determining their salary. Managers, ask yourself: “How should a person’s needs impact their compensation?” and “What’s this person’s worth to our organization?” And remember, the economic reality for today’s young professionals is different than what you experienced years (or decades) ago. Workers, know your worth (to the organization and externally in the market) and be powerful in your negotiations. How do you become more powerful in salary negotiations?
