All too often, people at organizations experiencing constant change (from acquisitions, reorgs, management shake-ups, layoffs, etc.), get left behind. A common response to change can be limiting self-narratives (ex: “Things will settle down soon, “I’ll wait for next year” or “Layoffs are inevitable, so I better keep my head down”) that can make you feel powerless and stuck. If you want more stability in a constant-change environment, embrace instability. Sure, change is hard, but ask yourself if concern (or fear) of change is holding you back from taking risks. What ways can you network, raise your profile, gain allies, and increase your skills? Be powerful and face change head on.
