Do you feel that your hard work should speak for itself, but you still don’t get that raise or promotion you desire? Even in this era of shameless Instagram and Twitter self-promotion, I’ve found that most people find it hard to speak up about their strengths and accomplishments. The constant challenge of finding the right balance between boastfulness and authenticity can lead to settling on a “I’ll just let my work speak for itself” approach. Unfortunately, hard work without (at least a little) self-promotion often gets overlooked in today’s workplace.

There are at least two times in a career that self-promotion is needed (and expected!): when applying for a new job/promotion and during your Annual Performance Review. Even if you don’t feel comfortable praising yourself publicly on a regular basis, give yourself permission to self-promote during the job search and APR process… that when it’s your time to shine.
